Over the past 22 years, the Daniel Maher Stained Glass Studio has been privileged to restore some of the most important architectural stained glass in the country including works by John LaFarge and Louis Comfort Tiffany. There is a huge responsibility in restoring any work of art. It starts with the greatest respect for the original stained glass, the artist and the history of the piece. The weight of history motivates us to do our best work: the most faithful restoration possible while retaining all the flavor and history of a significant work of art.
While restoration projects were a significant and profoundly satisfying part of the Daniel Maher Stained Glass Studio, we no longer engage in restorations or repairs of stained glass windows. PEACE WINDOW - ST THOMAS CHURCH, NY
The PEACE window is designed by White Friars, Powell Studio and is from the St. Thomas Church at the corner of 53rd and 5th Avenue in New York City. The window dates to 1933 and is one of eleven windows restored by ten studios across the USA under the direction of stained glass consultant Julie Sloan. The work included the disassembly and re-leading of the entire 14' x 30' window.
RESIDENTIAL WINDOW
The restoration of this stunning residential window was both challenging and fun. The window measures 44" x 72" and is constructed in up to three layers of glass. Suffering from severe buckling from poor support, the window was fully releaded and a non-intrusive bar grid added to the window.
BELCHER MOSAIC WINDOW
This Belcher Mosaic window is part of one of the largest remaining collections of this type of window. In contrast to the leaded or copper foil construction methods, Belcher windows consist of a cast lead matrix. This window is approximately 3' x 7' and is composed of thousands of pieces of glass cut in ½ " triangle shapes and hand faceted glass jewels. ANGEL WINDOW

ANGEL WINDOW
AFTER - The "Angel" window is a striking example of the design and craftsmanship of the Tiffany Studio. Located above the Altar, the window measures 72 inches in diameter and is composed of a variety of full and semi-opalescent glasses. The window is constructed in one continuous panel that in places is as many as three layers of glass thick. The oversized single section and multiple layers are typical of the experimental nature of many studios during the Opalescent Era. The experimental spirit of the Tiffany Studio included pushing the limits of the structural integrity of many artistic masterpieces. The "Angel" window was so severely buckled along the top and bottom border that the inscription plate was pushed out of the window. The window had also suffered from an attack of vandalism in the early 1980's. The head was broken and an area to the lower right of the figure was also damaged. The previous repairs to the head and background were poor matches for the craftsmanship of the Tiffany Studio.
ANGEL WINDOW
BEFORE - The challenge of restoring the Angel window was exacerbated by the presence of cold paint over the background and the border. Before restoration there were large areas of the window that appeared black with no light or color coming through. The window currently faces northwest and receives no direct sunlight. The window's previous location (now the parish hall) faced directly to the South. There was some documentation that a previous Pastor considered the window too bright. The cold paint was obviously not original and a decision was made to remove it.
ANGEL WINDOW
AFTER - Considering the poor structural condition, it was necessary to fully restore the window. This included the complete disassembly of the window, sash restoration and the design of new protective glazing. The cold paint was easily removed before disassembly with isopropyl alcohol. After disassembly the glass was thoroughly cleaned and deposits of dirt removed from between the layers of glass. Broken glass was rejoined using either silicone adhesive or small copper foil joints. The poorly matched glass of previous repairs was also replaced with several layers of glass that matched the original. The shattered head was recovered from a previous restorer and was edge glued with epoxy. After much research on similar Tiffany Angel heads, a piece of glass was painted to match the detail of the missing area.
ST MARY'S ORTHODOX CHURCH
BEFORE - This American Opalescent style window at St. Mary's Orthodox Church in Cambridge, MA had suffered from a previous poor restoration attempt where protective glazing had been applied as well as an attempt to re-waterproof the window in situ. The waterproofing seeped in between the multiple layers of glass which glued the layers of glass together. After replacing mismatched previous repairs, repositioning out of place and poorly oriented glass and re-leading the entire window, the positive aesthetic results are apparent in these before and after photographs.

BROOKS MEMORIAL WINDOW
The BROOKS MEMORIAL WINDOW was designed by Boston artist Sarah Wyman Whitman and was installed at Trinity Church in 1893.
SHERRON MEMORIAL WINDOW
The restoration of the Sherron Memorial window at the First Presbyterian Church in Salem, NJ included full disassembly and reinforcing of structural weaknesses in the leading and T-bars. This window has up to five layers and was designed and fabricated by the Tiffany Studio.
TREE of LIFE WINDOW
The Tree of Life window is located in Emmanuel Chapel in Dublin, NH. The window was designed and fabricated by the Tiffany studio and is constructed in a combination of the leaded and copper foil methods with selective multiple layers. Pictured is one of five sections. The window was severely buckled and was fully restored in the winter of 2001.
STAR of BETHLEHEM WINDOW
The Star of Bethlehem window by Louis Comfort Tiffany is one of twenty-three windows restored at St. Paul's Church in Milwaukee, WI. The restoration included the complete disassembly of the entire window and the conservation of fragile paint and devitrified glass. The window features striking drapery glass and up to five layers of glass and plating.
THE HAZEL WINDOW
The Hazel window is a documented Tiffany that is still owned by the family that originally commissioned it. First installed in a house in Massachusetts, the window depicts the family's grandmother, Hazel. Like many of the windows our studio has restored, the window had suffered the ravages of time and previous poor restoration. The Maher Stained Glass restoration effort included a total re-leading, replacement of previous poor replacement glass, edge gluing of cracked glass and reframing the window in a white oak frame. The family now looks at the image of their 16 year old grandmother from their home in California.
THE ASCENSION WINDOW
The ASCENSION WINDOW by the J.R. Lamb Studio is located in the Chancel of historic St. John's Church in downtown Montgomery, Alabama. The Church building dates to 1855 and the current chancel dates to 1869. The stained glass windows range in dates from the 1880's through the 1960's and includes windows by several studios, most notably the Connick and Tiffany studios. The Ascension window is 10' x 20' and was dedicated in 1900.
NORTH TRANSEPT WINDOW
The five large lancets of the North Transept in Union United Methodist Church in Boston MA were removed in the 1960's and were lost. Maher Stained Glass recreated the Aesthetic movement windows based on the colors and painted patterns of the South Transept. The windows blend perfectly with the original windows in the Church.
SPANISH GALLEON WINDOW
The repair of the Spanish Galleon was quite challenging and rewarding. The window was fabricated by Atelier Gebrand Glas in the Netherlands and was based on a painting by Max Nauta. The window is around 20 years old and was poorly packaged for shipping and storage. Six of the twenty broken pieces were shattered and were replaced with glass stained and painted to match the original. The other fourteen breaks were edge-glued to preserve the "hand of the artist". A custom bent steel bar grid was built to properly support the window and follow the leaded pattern so as to not disturb the design.

HOLY FAMILY WINDOW
The HOLY FAMILY window in the South Transept of St. Joseph's Church had suffered from extensive vandalism and equally damaging restoration several times in the past. Of greatest concern was the condition of the paint fired on the glass. There were obvious areas of paint deterioration and the restoration included plating the interior and exterior of the glass to replace areas of missing paint.
FOUR EVANGELISTS WINDOW
The Four Evangelists window at Emmanuel Church on Newbury Street in Boston required a thoughtful restoration effort. The window was originally located above the altar and faced east. Around the turn of the last century the window was moved to the south transept and was partially restored. As part of that work a cold paint was applied to the painted surfaces obscuring the finely painted glass. A consensus was reached that the cold paint was to be removed as part of our comprehensive restoration project. The window now appears as the original artist intended.
RESIDENTIAL TRANSOM WINDOW
This stunning window is one of three transom windows in Boston's historic Beacon Hill section. The window is 38" x 18" and is composed of 1052 pieces of chunk glass and a variety of opal and semi-opalescent glasses. The window was severely buckled and was fully re-leaded during the restoration.
CHANCEL WINDOWS
The three center Chancel windows of St. Joseph's Church in Detroit, Michigan contain the earliest commission in the United States by the Franz Meyer of Munich Studio. The top and bottom ornamental quatrefoil areas are by a local studio, Freidrichs and Staffen. The Meyer studio added the figurative and adjoining canopy areas to the windows at a later date. The restoration included full re-leading and selected painted over plating in the figures.
APPLETON MEMORIAL WINDOW
The Appleton Memorial window at Ascension Church in Ipswich, MA is a striking window and was a challenging and enjoyable restoration project. For many years the Church members thought the window was by the Tiffany studio, but after examination by Dr. James Yarnell of the LaFarge Catalogue Raissone the window is now considered to be a LaFarge. The window combines areas of fine detail with glass cut as small as 1/8" x 1/8" with as many as five layers in thickness of glass. The depth of translucency and vivid colors are artistically and spiritually inspirational.
TENNIS HALL of FAME WINDOW
A window we restored for the Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport,RI. If you are ever in Newport that should be on your list of places to see. An amazing piece of architecture. http://www.tennisfame.com/ I love the garb of the tennis player, Roman. It was not unusual for figures to have neo classical garb in late 1800's windows but with the tennis theme it is pretty funny.
TIFFFANY WINDOW
Way way back photo of me and Anna Johansson working on a 6' diameter Tiffany window from Theodore Parker Unitarian church in West Roxbury,MA Also one of the 14 Tiffany windows we restored for St Columba's Chapel sitting on the bench behind us as well. I have hair color! And in my bearded days as well.
TIFFANY WINDOW
This is an 8' x 15' Tiffany window we restored a few years ago at St John's Church in Newtonville MA. We were able to leave the main sections of the left and right lancets intact and we removed only the layers, re-waterproofed and re-applied the layers. The center section and the traceries were fully re-leaded.
ATHENEUM LIBRARY WINDOW
A strange little window medallion from the Atheneum, a private library, in Boston. The window is by Sarah Wyman Whitman and the large field of off white glass is very unusual. It is 1/4" thick and is an end cut of a machine rolled piece of glass. Along with the restoration I built a custom bent brass frame to support and hang the window.
