Portrait Windows are executed in a variety of techniques and themes. Anniversaries, birthdays, special events or the portrayal of the theme of authors or Einstein are captured using computer-generated imagery or hand painting. Whether painted and fired in the kiln, etched or sandblasted, the images become a permanent part of the glass and are constructed in the vivid colors unique to stained glass.
GREAT GRANDFATHER PORTRAIT WINDOW
The image is of the client's great grandfather in his Union Civil War uniform; the image is etched into the glass using a photographic sandblasting process. The image is framed with traditional stained glass constructed in the copper foil method.
FAMILY ALBUM PORTRAIT WINDOW
This Family Album combines professional quality posed photographs with spontaneous snapshots. A special effort is made to match the color of the glass with the mood of each photo. Small strips of colored glass and glass jewels are sprinkled between the variety of sizes and shapes of the images.
PENNY'S 50th BIRTHDAY PORTRAIT WINDOW
Penny's 50th birthday was celebrated with this portrait window, a gift from her husband Rufus. The window captures the spirit and joy of her life and family.
FRIEDELL FAMILY PORTRAIT WINDOW
This Christmas gift resides in the Friedell residence in Lexington, Kentucky. Given by their daughter, who in the center photo "won't put her arms down", the photos are a series of family portraits from 1968 - 1970. The portraits are created using flashed glass and are surrounded by richly colored stained glass and faceted glass jewels.
SISTER ANNETTE CARON MEMORIAL WINDOW
The Sister Annette Caron Memorial Window for Youville Hospital and Rehabilitation Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The 5 ' x 4 1/2' portrait window commemorates her life and work with Youville Hospital and features over 65 photographic images
BABY'S FIRST STEPS PORTRAIT WINDOW
These family snapshots in stained glass hang in a downtown Boston office and commemorate a weekend on Martha's Vineyard when their oldest daughter took her first steps. The window is fabricated in dichroic glass, glass jewels and flashed glass with the photographic images etched into the surface of the glass.
TRINITY CHURCH 10-YR SERVICE COMMEMORATIVE WINDOW
This window was given by the Trinity Church community to commemorate a staff member's 10 years of service. The images capture the architecture and people of Trinity Church. The window is composed of hand blown flashed glass and faceted glass jewels.
CHRISTENING PORTRAIT WINDOW
This window celebrates the Christening of the new addition to this Boston family. The images tell the story from pregnant belly to the first family portrait with "Baby Jacqui".
DITTO PORTRAIT WINDOW
Every pet owner knows what an important part of the family pets are. This panel commemorates Ditto, their Sheltie who died in early 2004. Murph, the Australian Terrier, also misses Ditto but everyone is reminded of Ditto as they pass the window that adorns a sunny window in the mudroom.
TRINITY CHURCH RECTOR PORTRAIT WINDOW
This window was a gift from parishioners to a departing rector at Trinity Church in Boston, Massachusetts. The images depict scenes of the church and images representing programs and projects he was involved with.
DICHROIC PORTRAIT WINDOW
Of all the pieces in the portrait series this window is the most experimental. The portrait itself is sandblasted onto the surface of a custom-made piece of dichroic glass. The dichroic coating transmits a blue color which changes to magenta at a 45 degree angle. The dichroic coating was applied to a piece of gold glass, producing a deep olive color when viewed straight on and a deep red color at a 45 degree angle. The shifting color serves as a metaphor in how we see people at different times or how they differ from our own perspective. The all-jewel border gives the piece a sparkling and lush textural appearance.
MASON FAMILY PORTRAIT WINDOW
The Mason Family Portrait window is a combination of traditional glass paint on glass and found glass objects. The picture of the Mason children dates to the 1960's and has been screened onto the glass and fired in the kiln. The Mason jar parts are a whimsical commentary on the Mason family with embossed lettering declaring Perfect Mason and Strong Shoulder Mason, among others. The rest of the glass in the window is found glass objects from housewares that provide a lively color palette and unique textural movement.
PAM PORTRAIT WINDOW
The "Pam" portrait window was a 50th birthday present for the client. The picture is of Pam in her finest Girl Scout garb as a child and is installed in a home in Palo Alto, CA.
TRINITY INSPIRES
A window I made for an Exhibition/Fundraiser at Trinity Church in Boston called TRINITY INSPIRES. The exhibit was of artworks inspired by Trinity Church, it's art, architecture or mission. I used the photo sandblast process to create the imagery on the glass. I included text in the "ribbon" borders taken from LaFarge's and Richardson's writings about Trinity Church. The high bidder at the auction were the Serpentino's, fellow stained glass artists here in the Boston area.
CAMBRIDGE FAMILY PORTRAIT WINDOW
As you enter the third floor master bedroom in this house in Cambridge, MA your eyes automatically follow the elegant pitched roof to a window facing west where you see a lovely quilt of color and texture in stained glass. As you approach the window it becomes apparent the texture and shadings of color are actually images rendered in stained glass. This Family Portrait was created from photographs tracing the family from its roots in Switzerland through 2003, particularly focusing on photographs of the children from infancy through adulthood. The images are rendered through a variety of techniques including silk screening, sandblasting and hand painting. Pieces of unpainted colored glass and glass jewels are interspersed throughout the window to give the piece a lively jewel-like appearance. NEW BABY PORTRAIT WINDOW
This panel was created for my friends Jeff and Christine upon the amazing birth of their baby Christen. All babies births are amazing but what puts this over the top is she was born at 24 weeks. To put it in perspective the jewels bordering the center are 1/2" in diameter. That makes her feet about 1 1/4" long. I put the actual footprint taken at birth under the gold pink Norman slab and painted it on the glass.
BIRTHDAY PORTRAIT WINDOW
The client had lots of great photos to choose from which really helps to translate the photos into the photos and blast process. Much of the textured/patterned glass is over 100 years old. I did a thin wash of enamel paint that settled into the low areas of the patterns adding color and more vibrancy of the pattern.
QUACKS PORTRAIT PANEL
This was a labor of love for my friend Karen's 40th birthday...a portrait panel of her dog QUACKS, my dog Max's girlfriend, as the centerpiece. The portrait was done on some custom dichroic glass I had made and the perimeter glass is also the custom dichroic glass.

This portrait window was a gift from the Mayor of Somerville and his staff to the retiring Chief of Staff. The window includes imagery from some of the historic structures in Somerville, MA.
