ART PANELS

Art windows are the vision of the artist and an expression of his or her own aesthetics.
VICTORIAN PATCHWORKVICTORIAN PATCHWORK
32" x 34" Often mistaken as a purely contemporary design, the Victorian Patchwork is inspired by an 1880's crazy quilt in glass. A dozen found glass objects add to the "everything but the kitchen sink" spirit of this window. 32" x 34" Often mistaken as a purely contemporary design, the Victorian Patchwork is inspired by an 1880's crazy quilt in glass...

EINSTEINEINSTEIN
22.5" x 28.5" This window depicts Einstein on a field of space, stars and heavenly bodies. The large yellow green jewel diagonal down and to the right is made of glass colored with uranium, as are the lighter rays emanating from him. Several of the jewels and objects in the window represent practical explanations of gravitational effects. To his left is a spiral swirl in a purple jewel representing a galaxy, and further to the left a small arc of light. Einstein predicted that you could see the same object in two locations from light bent around a dense object. 22.5" x 28.5" This window depicts Einstein on a field of space, stars and heavenly bodies. A CRAFTMAN'S LANDSCAPEA CRAFTMAN'S LANDSCAPE
A Craftsman's Landscape features glass cut from rectangular bottles to create the green rectangular background pattern. Lightly textured blown glass was used to render the landscape and create an expansive view through the window. The window is framed in a white oak frame with "mission" style details. ARABESQUE PATTERN WINDOWARABESQUE PATTERN WINDOW
29-1/2" x 24" This lush Arabesque pattern window was created using flashed glass. Photo resists are glued to the glass and the patterns are sandblasted through a thin veneer of color. Silver oxide stains are fired on areas of the purple glass changing the color to yellow, adding complexity and bright color to the design. 29-1/2" x 24" This lush Arabesque pattern window was created using flashed glass. BALUCH PERSIAN RUG WINDOWBALUCH PERSIAN RUG WINDOW
3'X5' This window is meant to capture the spirit of fiber arts/rugs in glass and is a literal translation of a Baluch Persian rug. All of the glass is flashed glass which is a glass with a thin veneer of color on top of a clear glass. The flower patterns in the center were all originally a solid color and everything except the piping of the flower line were etched. We used calligraphy pens to pixelate the line pattern. In order to further capture the weave pattern we etched the weave into the back of the glass and pushed a glass paint into that. The edge was purposely left "soft" and undulating like a rug would be. 3'X5' This window is meant to capture the spirit of fiber arts/rugs in glass and is a literal translation of a Baluch Persian r...
DECO BIRD IDECO BIRD I
The Deco Bird window was designed around the central pressed glass bird image which was part of a glass serving tray with handles, a side lip and bottom feet. The bird was harvested and shaped to fit in the window. The areas around the bird are 3 layers thick and the rest of the glass in the window are handblown, glass jewels, and dichroic sparklite glass. ART DECO BIRD IIART DECO BIRD II
The center bird medallion is actually the bottom of a beautiful Deco glass serving tray. I cut the lip, handles, and feet off and ground the piece to a pleasing shape. I used the proportions of the tray as inspiration for the rest of the design. The center bird medallion is actually the bottom of a beautiful Deco glass serving tray. GLASLOCKGLASLOCK
The interlocking design of Glaslock was inspired by a found object, an "urban fossil". A popped ignition switch provided the inspiration to create this colorful abstract. CITY SYSIPHUSCITY SYSIPHUS
City Sysiphus pays homage to the work ethic and meaning found in a life of work and labor. Sysiphus is pushing his gear and stands on the "human" buildings of this city. The tenement buildings are rendered in a variety of colors and ornament. Some of the windows resemble faces and have personality. The structures above the tenements are the manufacturing buildings of today's high tech industry. The window patterns and decoration are rigid and ordered. The buildings of high finance reach into the sky and the textured glass glistens jewel-like as the sun strikes the window. RESURRECTIONRESURRECTION
23" x 31-1/2" Resurrection is both amusing and sentimental. The window depicts stained glass workers removing a diamond "temporary" window and installing a religious window. The imagery often inspires lively philosophical discussions about God and Man. 23" x 31-1/2" Resurrection is both amusing and sentimental. TRAGEDY and SATIRETRAGEDY and SATIRE
Tragedy and Satire is based on the classic image of drama masks. This is a very personal interpretation of the imagery with Tragedy not being too tragic and Satire being a little biting and nasty. Any resemblance of the design of this window to Dan's childhood Philco TV is not a coincidence. Tragedy and Satire is based on the classic image of drama masks. THE EXQUISITE FISHTHE EXQUISITE FISH
In July of 2000, Daniel Maher Stained Glass was invited to take part in the Windows Art Project in Davis Square, part of the Art Beat celebration in Somerville MA using the theme of the Mystic River. The idea behind THE EXQUISITE FISH came from the surrealistic parlour game 'The Exquisite Corpse.' Each artist at my studio was assigned sections of fish to create. The only established link between the sections is the outline of the fish body. The inevitable uniqueness of each panel along with the beauty and variety of glass that created this one fantastic fish symbolically represents the beauty and bio-diversity of the Mystic River. The fish was installed into a storefront window in front of a lightbox to make it visible to passersby on the street and sidewalk. At approximately 5' wide, this fish was a truly spectacular sight. PIXEL BIRDS (before plating)PIXEL BIRDS (before plating)
Pixel Birds before the plating, or layer of glass in front of the panel, was added. Tiffany and LaFarge would often plate glass or windows with an obscuring glass to soften the line of the lead to look more painterly, or create the illusion of "atmospheric perspective". Atmospheric perspective is the effect of looking through veils of atmosphere on a humid day. Using the same plating idea, but using a prismatic glass instead, creates an interactive line effect and the pixeling of the image reminds some people of the "Lightbrite" toy. Pixel Birds before the plating, or layer of glass in front of the panel, was added. Tiffany and LaFarge would often plate glass...

BOOK and BEERBOOK and BEER
This is a small panel I made for my friend Tom for his birthday in 1991. Tom is a philosopher, teacher, stained glass artist, wicked nice guy and most importantly a beer drinker. He looks nothing like the figure who is my impression of a philosopher equally dedicated to beer. All of the glass used was from the Connick Studio which is where Tom and I met and worked together.
